The Georgia GAP Food Safety Certification Program was established by the Georgia fresh produce industry to verify that good agricultural practices were followed during production, packing and shipping. It is a third party inspection program set up to ensure food safety and security for those producers who choose to participate. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration Services “Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables” was released in 1998 and served as the guide for the development of the Georgia GAP Program.
