Produce Food Safety Services (PFSS), a membership service provided by the Georgia Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association, is offering a one day, hands-on workshop to help growers create customized food safety manuals for their farm operations. This workshop will have a focus on organic production but is not limited to organic producers. The content of the workshop does not change as it pertains to production methods, but the context of the conversation is slightly altered with organic production.

Participants will leave with a mostly completely, food safety manual as well as the confidence and ability to complete the manual, make edits and implement the program on their farm.  The workshop will take place 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on August 8, 2017 at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, GA. Registration is $50 per participant, with discounts for GFVGA members.

If you plan to develop or implement a documented Food Safety Program for your fruit and/or vegetable farming operations, harvest or packing this one day workshop is for you! Most intermediate or large chain stores and wholesalers now require some level of food safety program from each farm before they purchase. This is even more pressing with the implementation of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules. Even smaller operations selling directly to consumers that may not undergo a 3rd party verification audit are advised to develop a Food Safety Manual for their farm. This issue has become a vital component of doing everyday business on today’s farms and will be even more imperative in the future with the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act.

After the completion this one day workshop, you will have literally created/written key aspects of your own customized food safety manual including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), checklists, documentation, corrective actions and more. The class will be limited to 20 participants and will be using a web-based food safety manual development program. Computers, lunch and beverage breaks will be provided. Please be prepared with a pen and an active email address.

Participants will leave with:
Notebook of presentation materials
The majority of a complete customized farm food safety program
Food safety training video
Food safety signs
