GFVGA to co-host remote participation in Water Summit

The two-day Water Summit is an opportunity for growers, industry representatives, educators and researchers to discuss with FDA and other regulators all the ways water is used on farms, the hazards associated with different types of water use, the challenges and concerns related to current standards for water quality testing and workable solutions for reducing risks to protect public health.

Water used during the production of fruits and vegetables represents a potential pathway for contamination with human pathogens. In the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR), microbial quality standards were established for agricultural water that comes in contact with produce to control risks associated with water use. However, FDA received feedback from numerous stakeholders raising concerns that some of these standards may be too complex to understand and difficult to implement. In response to these concerns, FDA is considering how to address these issues by exploring ways to simplify the PSR standards related to agricultural water.

The two-day Water Summit is an opportunity for growers, produce industry representatives, educators and researchers to discuss with regulatory personnel the diverse ways that water is used on farms, the hazards associated with water use on produce, the challenges and concerns related to current standards for water quality testing and workable solutions for reducing risks to protect public health. FDA wants to collaborate with all parts of the industry to develop ideas that support risk reduction related to water. This Water Summit will include informational presentations and breakout discussions. Participants will explore challenges related to the requirements of Subpart E – Agricultural Water and discuss potential solutions that are workable while still protecting public health.  This is a great opportunity for growers to share with FDA and other regulators what is good about the current water standard and what needs to be changed and how it could change. 

Join us for remote participation in Tifton, Georgia for the two-day Water Summit that will include informational presentations and break out discussions.  Participants will explore challenges related to the requirements of Subpart E – Agricultural Water and discuss potential solutions that are workable while protecting public health. Comments from remote locations will be consolidated and sent forward in real time. Participation limited to 50 attendees due to space limitations.
