The Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, GFVGA, Board of Directors met in Atlanta for their annual Board Meeting and Leadership Summit on Tuesday, February 4.

This day-long conference serves as an orientation for new board members, allows the board to have an in-depth discussion on programming and create a strategic plan for the year.

This year the Board charged GFVGA staff to focus on marketing efforts to encourage consumers to check their Country of Origin Labeling, COOL, on their produce and for retailers to buy domestic grown produce while it is in season. GFVGA will also continue to work to find growers relief from the United States Mexico Canada Agreement, USMCA.

Educational and food safety offerings will also be a priority in 2020, by continuing to provide growers with the educational opportunities they need to be successful.

Following the Leadership Summit, the Board attended the annual Legislative Breakfast on Wednesday, February 5 and heard from Governor Brian Kemp and Commission Gary Black.

Governor Kemp remarked that while he supported USMCA he is committed to working to ensure the continued growth of Georgia agriculture. He also discussed the rural task force and the work the Department of Economics is doing to bring new business into the areas hit by Hurricane Michael.

Commissioner Black spoke about the health of the agriculture industry in Georgia, the strength of the Georgia Grown program and gave an update on Federal disaster relief.

“The Leadership Summit and Legislative Breakfast are important events for GFVGA,” said Aries Haygood, GFVGA President. “This two-day event gives the board the opportunity to set the agenda ofthe association for the year and attending the breakfast allows us to meet and fellowship with others in our industry to find ways to work together to accomplish the same goal: to grow the agriculture industry in the state of Georgia.”
